Jeffrey Berman Architect’s new CT Simulation Suite for the Radiation Oncology Department at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center navigated a tight space with a central column obstruction.
The curved plan negotiates the various clearances and limitations to create program pockets. This curvature aesthetic extends to the dual ceiling system consisting of standard ceiling tiles with decorative modular panels suspended below. The ceiling design performs two significant functions: 1) it conceals utilities and equipment components while leaving them accessible for future maintenance and upgrades and 2) it evenly distributes diffused light.
The frameless shielded window along with the ceiling breaks the barrier between the control and treatment components, creating a seamless, unified space for enhanced patient communication and experience.
