Jeffrey Berman Architect was selected by MSKCC to design the expansion and modernisation of the Nuclear Medicine Department. The project is a multi-phase, multi-year rebuilding of the total 12,000sf department. It includes the replacement of equipment with new PET/CT systems and newly developed "skylight" Gamma Camera systems.
Our design and planning for the department reflects the client's goal of providing patient-focused care in a spa-like setting. Our planning gave the Nuclear Medicine Department a new, ground level entrance lobby on First Avenue to serve their outpatient population, which account for 85% of the total patient population.
A new waiting area and physician offices provided appropriate spaces for the projected volume of patients and created the spaces required to install two new PET/CT scanners, the first phase of the equipment replacement, and an anchor for the reorganization of the imaging suite.
The PET/CT exam rooms are unique in their use of open, all-glass control areas situated within each scan room. The close contact of the staff and patient improves communications during the exams and calms the patient during the long examinations. The openness of the room and the lighting provide for patient comfort. The unique ceiling design provides an environment where the patient can focus their attention on their surroundings rather than the medical equipment or the exam procedure.
