Minimally Invasive Surgery Center
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY

Jeffrey Berman Architect was selected by Memorial Sloan-Kettering to be the architect responsible for the design of two new operating rooms and their support facilities, and the integration of new, minimally invasive surgery technology. The project included two OR's, a 3000 square foot mezzanine gallery and a 650 square foot teaching laboratory.

The OR's need to function seamlessly for both minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. They must also allow for the transition between the two types of surgery during one case. The design incorporates state-of-the-art technologies and systems to provide for patient and staff safety, optimal monitor placement, 360-degree patient acSIscess, centralized control of medical equipment and the routing of surgical images. Electronic privacy glass provides the surgeons with control of gallery viewing without mechanical shades. Equipment cabinets, wiring, videoconferencing recording devices and the OR documentation station were integrated during design to provide optimum use of space and clear sight lines during cases. The rooms were planned for the next generation upgrades for equipment built-in to minimize future disruption.
