Collections Storage

The Entomology Department has one of the world's largest collections of insects, including many type specimens. The storage facility had not been renovated for twenty-five years, and the growth of the collection had exceeded its capacity. Space was limited and offsite storage of the collection was not feasible, as it needed to remain accessible for research activities.

Jeffrey Berman Architect evaluated the existing space and determined that an additional level of compact storage and a half-level of materials storage could be installed within the envelope of the existing building; and additionally, that existing cabinets could be compacted.

The project expanded the capacity of the existing space by a factor of three without affecting the landmark facades or interiors. The completed space includes compact collections storage, supply storage, curatorial work areas and reference library accommodation. Special lighting was installed in collections storage and curatorial work areas.
